The trade-off is that fiberboard and moisture are not good friends. What "high-end" actually means in both categories
This is worth pausing on, because not all laminate and not all vinyl plank are equal. The gap between an entry-level product and a premium one in either category is significant, and it shows up in ways that matter: the realism of the wood grain embossing, the thickness of the wear layer, the stability of the core, and how the floor holds up five years from now in a busy household.
Thicker laminate, generally 10mm or 12mm, with a higher AC rating for abrasion resistance is a meaningfully better product than a thinner, cheaper version. Similarly, a luxury vinyl plank with a 12-mil or 20-mil wear layer will outlast a 6-mil product by years in a high-traffic home. These are the kinds of details that are easy to overlook when comparing price tags, but they are exactly what separates a floor that ages gracefully from one that does not.

If your priority is waterproof performance throughout the entire home, particularly in a Florida climate with humidity, pets, kids, or rooms near water, luxury vinyl plank is the more forgiving and resilient choice. If you are focused on a specific room or two where moisture is not a concern and you want the firmest, most hardwood-like feel at a competitive price, quality laminate is hard to beat.
